the Middle Lands (Magician) series order

Mostly just for my own organization, and because Amazon has yet to recognize them as a series! But in case anyone else would like it (also all m/m unless otherwise noted) (okay, well, Lorre is whatever he wants to be, or whatever he and Gareth want him to be!—but he does tend to sort of default to his most familiar shape / the shape he was in when he and Gareth met)–

…here’s the Middle Lands (Magician) chronological order, er, as of April 2024:

~”Arrows” (Van/Milo) (+ Van/Lorre, kind of) (Lorre’s only around 80-90 years old here, not, like, 300+) (coming late May!)

~”The Twelfth Enchantment” (Garrett/Alex) (already published) (for reference, Lorre’s probably about 120; he does still remember his age but he’ll lie about it, mostly for the mystery)

~Apprentice’s Luck (Talis/Jer; maybe roughly 70 years after “Twelfth Enchantment”) (already published)

~(untitled wip Talis/Jer sequel story, set immediately after)

~”Sorceress” (Lily/Will – m/f, bi characters) (already published) (Lorre is around 300, give or take)

~Magician (Lorre/Gareth; about 8 years after “Sorceress”) (already published)

~(untitled wip Merry/Hilda story, f/f, about 15 years later)

…and here’s the Middle Lands (Magician) publication order, which is different:

~”Sorceress” (Lily/Will) (already published) (the original-original version of this was published as “Lily’s Enchantment” – not my title choice! – by Ellora’s Cave years ago!)

~Magician (Lorre/Gareth) (already published)

~”The Twelfth Enchantment” (Garrett/Alex) (already published)

~Apprentice’s Luck (Talis/Jer) (already published)

~”Arrows” (Van/Milo) (+ Van/Lorre, kind of) (coming late May!)

~(untitled wip Talis/Jer sequel story, in progress)

~(untitled wip Merry/Hilda story, barely started)

…plus, some folklore & general history that I have not written but that live in my head:

~How The Grand Sorcerer Discovered The Wind-Summoning Horn Of Nennius The Somber

~That Time (Okay, One Of Many Times) Lorre Annoyed The Chief Minister Of Penth

~The Ancient Winter Empire

~Whatever Did Happen To All The Unicorns, Actually?

~The Tale Of The Fire Prince

~Thurston

~Magical Sex With A Poet In A Haystack, Just For Fun (And, Regrettably, A Terrible Poem In Consequence)

~500 Years Later, Archaeologists Excavate The Site Of Lorre & Garrett’s First School

…a couple of random notes:

1) for real-world historical analogues, the timespan is very roughly 1400-1700, though it’s not that tidy as far as dates! And Lorre’s internal chronology isn’t the most reliable. Sometimes he lies about things, or he used to, for the Mysteriousness; sometimes he just genuinely can’t remember; sometimes he’s been a river for a while and water doesn’t think about time the same way…

2) along those lines, I wanted that medieval-to-early-modern framing: by the time we get to Gareth, we’ve got portable printed books, good sea-trade routes and cosmpolitanism, a little hint (very little!) at steam power and uses for metals…but we don’t yet have large-scale industrialization (and might not, or at least it’ll be eco-friendly…Lorre will have Opinions).

3) while Lorre is *old*, he’s not *that* old – there’s a good amount of history he wasn’t around for! He was definitely there for a lot of the unification and consolidation of what’s more or less a fantasy France-adjacent realm – and his lifespan, er, spans a lot of transitions – but he doesn’t know everything (don’t tell him that) and he’s not immortal. It’s sort of like being Chaucer, versus the Beowulf-poet (look at my medievalism showing itself *laughs*), except Chaucer’s lived long enough to read the new books by Jonathan Swift, by this point…
